I know im gonna lose a few ppl with this one.
A while ago I was having a debate with some friends about what constituted Dub in modern electronic music, during which I kept referring to the phrase / genre "Dub Tech". When prompted to explain what Dub Tech was, I promptly promised to make a mix that would serve as an example of the sound i was trying to describe. This is that mix.
The following is not purely Dub Techno, nor is it purely Dub. But it is highly dub influenced / inflected music that is equally rooted in the traditions of more modern electronic genres such as Techno and House. One of the pervasive themes or sounds of these tracks is something often referred to as "Deep". They are very atmospheric, with loads of washy synths, reverb and delays. Most are quite long, and in keeping with techier traditions, are minimal and repetitive, slowly changing over time. Many are my all time favorites.
The opening track makes for a fantastic gateway into this conversation. Its more dub than tech, but it does have a faint 4/4 kick that tells you where were headed. Then Deadbeat came out last year with what is now one of my favorite songs that pretty much nails it. Further notables include the Swayzak remix of TLBjr ( one hero of mine remixing another ), the awesome spoken word bit about a mushroom trip from Marshall Jefferson, and the utter classic dose of Techno Minimalism that is G Man's Quo Vadis.
